Karin and Bob were at the Puerto Penasco and sent us pictures for all to see. Their report is as follows:
The building with glassed in decks is not a Luxxe Tower; these are the condos that they are selling as "homes" with equity trade value from your Luxxe units. The pictures of the swimming pools at night are at the resort. The ones from up above during the day are from the penthouse.
The building under construction will be the Grand Bliss and Grand Mayan units.
There are no units as of yet designated as Grand Luxxe. There are only Grand Luxxe models at Puerto Penasco. I will note under the photos what they are.
Grand Luxxe units do however, exchange for the Sister Units. For example Luxxe Master Suite = 2 Bedroom Suite plus a Master Room in the Grand Bliss or Grand Mayan, OR a 2 bedroom Suite plus a 1 bedroom suite in the Bliss or Mayan Palace. These weeks can be separated so you would have 2 weeks for the price of the one maintenance fee of the Grand Luxxe.
Yes, you need transportation from either Phoenix or Tucson to Puerto Penasco. We selected Head Out to Rocky Point shuttle service. The driver stopped several times, allowing us to shop for groceries, go to the duty free shop and stop for tacos :-}}.
I was told that there is an airport and that private planes are currently landing near the resort. Someone connected with SouthWest is trying to put together an agreement to fly into this airport, (which is owned by Sr. Chavez). When and whether or not this is going to happen varies with whomever you talk to. BTW, Head Out to Rocky Point shuttle also accommodates different plane arrivals. The cost varies according to how many are traveling.
The golf course was an interesting experience for us. More like a links course, very nice.
There is a shuttle service to transport you to the course, in a Hummer no less! It is only 1 mile or less from the resort. I was told that there will be 2 other courses planned.
As an aside, we were also told that Sr. Chavez owns 53,000 acres and is planning on building a retirement community. Therefore he also will need to build a hospital. There is to be a small mall with a grocery store as well.
There is only one restaurant at the resort so far. It serves very nice food and is reasonable. Management lowered the meal prices. The Buffet is $21.95 and meals start at $10.95. The buffet has a different theme, ie Italian, Mexican, Grill. All the service people are very friendly.
We were there from 12-14 until 12-21. The weather was a bit cool this time of year, low 70's.
There is a indoor pool which we took advantage of.
The resort is isolated and laid back, so lots of time to read.
We went into town one day, and my husband went fishing on another day. He had a nice time. The resort is 20 miles from town, appx $45 r/t for a taxi.
We met other couples which is always fun. We all got together for dinner. We actually met them on the shuttle, so we had over 4 hours to get to know them.
The resort was not at all crowded as you can see by the photos. I enjoyed it however, it was a nice change from having to compete for the lounges by the pool.

A fellow owner and viewer has volunteered to post information about some of the resorts her husband and she frequently visit. In this post she provides a great review of the Puerto Penasco Resort. Karin and Bob also contributed photos taken in December during a recent trip taken by her husband and she.

Puerto Penasco
This is a very family friendly resort. The resort is nice ? what else would you expect at a Mayan Palace? There is the original section that was built about 2003-2004 and then a tower building next to it (built in 2006).
Children absolutely LOVE the beach there. The beaches are almost white. Be sure to take a shovel and bucket for digging in the sand. (A camp shovel works great.) There are tide pools and the waves are so mild that small children are not afraid to go out into the ocean.
This is the only Mayan Palace with an indoor pool. I think it is closed in the summer because it would get so hot in there. It is really nice in the winter. They do have some activities in the pool area and for children, parents are encouraged to participate.
One night each week they have a bonfire with dancing and beer & pop for about $10 per person. They may roast marshmallows and hot dogs too. We have never been, but one night we did see a group of people having fun around the fire.
There was free WIFI in the lobby the 5 times we have been between October 2007 and March 2009, but I recently read a post on TUG that you now have to pay for WIFI and can use your laptop in your room.
It is not close to town (15+ miles), but if you are there during shrimp season, you must go eat some fresh shrimp. We generally go into town only one day because we just love to hang out on the beach.
There is not a very large grocery in PP, so we do take a lot of food when we go - snacks, beer, pop, milk, eggs, and sandwich makings and maybe spaghetti for breakfast and lunch or dinner.
I must admit that food is very good and the prices are not too high at this resort. For the quality and ambiance, it's well worth it. The food seems to be very fresh. Breakfast from 7-9 is $11 per person. Buffets at night are $18-31 for adults. The most expensive buffets are Prime Rib night and Grill night. Both are worth every penny. We ate the Prime Rib buffet last October with friends and he is the pickiest beef guy you will ever meet - he thought it was wonderful.
The championship golf course is gorgeous there. Several holes are oceanfront. We don't golf, but one of our friend?s does and was quite impressed.
They had just started on what looked like more Mayan Palace units (probably Bliss) and a Grand when we were there in mid-March 2009. No walls, just foundation and some support beams. My guess would be at least another 12-18 months (or more) and the larger one will be called a Grand Bliss. When these are finished, I suppose they will finish the pool that has been partially complete since our first visit. It is below the tower and the new buildings that are under construction.
We like it as we can drive there in less than 4 hours and enjoy sitting under a palapa with our feet in the sand. As Monica on TUG said, ?It might not be everyone's cup of tea, but it is very, very nice - especially with the economy like it is." - Phyllis - 2009
